We sorted all of our shapes by whether they were 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional. Next, we put shapes together to create our shape man, We used interactive writing to label each part of the shape man. Last we analyzed our shape man according to how many of each shape we saw. This meets so many Common Core Math Standards and incorporates problem solving and writing. The kids loved it!
I decided to allow my students to help me decorate my classroom. I had a number line from 1 to 20. Each new number learned, we talked about all the different ways to make that number and how it looked in different representations. I allowed the students to help write/make the number for the number line. After the new number was made, the students recorded his/her findings in a journal. Meets a lot of Common Core Standards, and the students loved being involved. It gave the students a sense of ownership of the learning in the classroom.
